Redding School of the Arts, Redding California

Shapiro Didway designed the campus and playground for this K-8 charter school.  The sustainable landscape developed incorporates native plants, reclaimed rain water runoff, traffic-calming elements and a high efficiency irrigation system.  Extensive efforts were made to save the site’s many existing Blue Oaks and incorporate them into the campus design.  The centerpiece of the campus is the discovery playground built upon a dynamic design structure of overlapping circles.  Outdoor misting areas, a world map, zip lines, cultural diversity, a unique slide mound and a series of play structures comprise the play area.  Outdoor classrooms and a series themed interior courtyards provide opportunities for experiential learning.  The end product for this Platinum LEED project was achieved through close collaboration among all team members which included; the McConnell Foundation, City of Redding staff and Trilogy Architecture.
