The Merrick, Portland, Oregon

Shapiro Didway designed a 5,000 square foot roof garden for this new 180-unit apartment complex located in inner northeast Portland. As the primary open space for the development, the garden provides a variety of private and group outdoor experiences for residents. The design includes two terraces. The exercise terrace is a quiet, visually unique, multiuse space located adjacent to a large, reflective water feature. The observation terrace provides private seating areas with stunning views to downtown. A vine-covered trellis creates a green edge along the garden visible from adjacent streetscapes. In the center of the garden, a large grass berm provides an informal seating and relation space. Large deciduous trees provide shade and a low stone wall establishes informalseating. Landscape screens outside each patio area ensure privacy for residents. Plantings are low maintenance yet provide year-round color and interest.
